Thanks for all the input. I had no idea so many folks would have such good chicken advice. The lesson here? When in doubt, ask.

I loved reading this story. We have chickens and guineas and are enjoying them both. Our chickens are so sweet and have provided us with a bountiful supply of eggs. We have a variety of breeds and ordered twice from Murray McMurray Hatchery with excellent results. Just to weigh-in on the rooster, you HAVE to get one. I love hearing him crow in the morning. It's like our little "hobby farm" is complete. In addition, we also have 3 llamas (one is expecting mid-April) and Jacob sheep (with lambs do anytime). I'd love to have you stop by this spring. We are trying to clean up with some of this great weather. We are going to add a barn cat when the opportunity presents itself. Sebastian is allergic so no more inside cats for us. Your chicken coop looks great. I've always wanted a red barn but have settled for a red metal roof. Hopefully you'll have better luck than us on the gardening front. I'm still going to attempt one this year. It's a pride thing and I'm determined to succeed! Looking forward to following your flock!

It sounds like we are headed in similar directions. We have a friend who may hatch some diddles, we'll let you know. Tractor Supply had some Tetra Tints (unknown variety) last spring that were good. I think Brahmas are good as well. We are also thinking about a goat, we just need the fence. So are you coping us? By the way we've started making our own peanut butter.

Hi Stacey -
I loved Barbara Kingsolver's book. You'll surely be visiting the supermarket a lot less this year. In the past few years I've gotten local eggs, bread, meat and produce from the farmers market (which we have year-round!). I rarely eat processed foods, so my visits cut down as well. Will e-mail you a great contact person for advice on chickens and goats:)

I haven't read The Wednesday Wars, but I might check it out. Also saw a review of something called Skellig the other day-- it sounded really cool. Have any of you guys read it?

I Love reading lists! We also generally have several books going each.
I just finished Henrietta's War, by Joyce Dennys, which was fun and quick, and I'm currently reading Daniel Deronda (Not short!); A World on Fire, by Amanda Foreman; A Jaques Barzun Reader, and Kilvert's Diary.
Travis is reading Brady, by Jean Fritz, and At Her Majesty's Request, by Walter Dean Myers.
Katie is reading Little Women; Love, Ruby Lavender, by Deborah Wiles; The Borrowers Afield; and Fruitlands: Louisa May Alcott Made Perfect, by Gloria Whelan.

Have you read The Wednesday Wars, by Gary Schmidt? I don't read a huge lot of juvenile fiction, but I did recently read that one on an aunt's recommendation and enjoyed it very much.

Oh, and we are reading The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, by Joan Aiken, aloud and the kids really like it.
